Why “47”?
8 Reasons to Apply
1. American Sign LanguageAs a student at “47,” you'll take ASL throughout your time here, and we don't expect you to already be fluent when you arrive. It may seem obvious that you'll take ASL coursework, since it's in our name. But more than an isolated series of classes, ASL is a core part of our community. From ASL Thursdays, when teachers are expected to integrate Deaf Space principles and ASL in every class, to regular ASL performances by students and visiting groups, ASL is simply part of everyday life at “47.”

We expect our students to take charge of their own lives as they blossom into adulthood. We take our School Leadership Team and Equity Team—both of which include several students along with parents, faculty, and administrators—very seriously. Students come first at “47,” and you'll often see students guiding teachers about their learning styles.

We prepare all of our students to attend a 2- or 4-year college after graduation, because we believe there's no such thing as too much education. We have two college advisers (right) who can help you decide where you want to go after “47,” whether that's across the street or halfway around the world. As preparation for that, they offer counseling on everything from resume-writing to financial aid. Plus, many of our students are active participants in free College Now courses at CUNY schools.
